Dolna Banya, Borovets.
Dolna Banya is one of Bulgaria’s ecologically purest towns and famous mineral spas with a population of nearly 5,000 people, located between the mountains of Rila and Sredna Gora close to the famous ski resort of Borovets, 66 km from Sofia. The town has long been famous for its EP traditions. The climate is mild continental. The relief is semi-mountainous with an altitude of 640 meters. The town is traversed by the Maritsa, Dolnobanska Bistritsa, Ochushnitsa and Gutsalska Rivers.
Dolna Banya’s greatest wealth are the numerous mineral springs which are still growing in number. They all have unique properties and include almost the whole spectrum of curative properties.
Dolna Banya is a town predominantly making ecologically pure products.
Dolna Banya’s history is multi-century old. It goes back to the Thracians. Venetitsa, Yurta and Koychovets are the names of the three settlements located very close to one another, later united in one known to historians as Banya, called Dolna Banya in the second half of the 19th c.
Many tribes and peoples have left a trace here - Romans and Byzantines, Proto-Bulgarians and Slavs - they were all attracted by the natural beauties and riches - the warm mineral springs, the clean air and mild climate.
In the past Dolna Banya was a crossroads of the old Bosnian Plovdiv-Samokov-Nis and with its inns was an important stopover for spending the night along the Arnaout route.
The basic aim of the municipal strategy of Dolna Banya is the development and assertion of the municipality as a leading national and international center for recreational and spa tourism, sport, rest and recreation.
The Dolna Banya spa has holiday homes, hotels and two tourist chalets - Gerginitsa and Venetitsa. The resort has a modern motel and hotels as well as good sporting facilities - a stadium and swimming pools.
On the road between Dolna Banya and Kostenets is situated the first private certified airfield in Bulgaria. It was established in 1999 by pilot Eng. Vatko Beshliev. The airfield has a pool, a volleyball ground, a tennis court, snooker facilities and other amenities. The favourable climate in the region, the proximity of mountain resort villages provide good conditions for aviation tourism.
Another attraction are the white storks which are a good omen. Dolna Banya is among the first winners of the first prize of the National Contest for the greatest number of stork nests with 21 nesting couples of white storks.
For the 2nd year running the European Ecology Fesitival was held in the town and is expected to be a yearly event. Here, people and companies with interests in this field meet to discuss aims and plans for the future. The symbol of the Festival is the Stork as Dolna Banya is famous for its stork nests. It is fast becoming a strategic and attractive place for investment opportunities - with its high mountain ranges and flat plateaus - ideal for both golfing and skiing tourist markets. The new Nicklaus Golf Club is located within 2km of the town. There is also an established 18-hole golf course at Ihtiman - approx 18km from Dolna Banya with very reasonable prices. The international Ski resort of Borovets is approx 18km from the town. The "Super Borovets" project, is expected to revitalise the resort which is already popular with both the UK and European communities. Meanwhile the Municipality of Dolna Banya is already receiving its own interest with Tobo-BG currently investing in design plans for ski-lifts to be installed within a few kilometres of the town. Upon completion, the whole length of the ski slopes will extend to a total of approx 19 kilometres. They envisage a cascade of lift lines and the construction of a winter stadium (expected capacity 20,000) to be constructed at 2,500 metres.
Dolna Banya Municipality have also entered into a contract with Bulgaria GFA Ltd to establish "Wellness Island" involving the creation of a Health and Beauty Spa with hotels and restaurants and sporting and recreational facilities. Such a Spa complex already exists in Munich, Germany and they will be recreating it in Dolna Banya - it will be the only one of its kind in Bulgaria! The Dolna Banya Municipality is forward thinking and welcomes and embraces foreign investment. However, whilst it wishes to enter the international community it is also committed to ensuring that the essential essence of the area and its customs and traditions will not be compromised and will be integrated into the new emerging community.
